The Final Roster for WUCC 2014

A few months have passed since we announced first announced our representatives for the World Ultimate Club Championships. Since then, some players have had to step down, and some, over the course of tryouts, have stepped up. Last week, Ultimate Canada laid their stamp of final approval on this roster. This is the Furious George that will step onto the field in Italy.

For those who don’t know the mandate of the U.S Open, it is a tournament that aspires to cultivate international cachet – a top-shelf showdown where the American elite can face the foreigners. To that end, they annually invite teams from various high-powered ultimate nations to partake in the action. Since only the top end of the TCT Pro Flight can earn an automatic berth to the U.S. Open, Furious (alongside Traffic and Union) qualified thereto as the Canadian envoys by winning the Canadian Ultimate Championship. Notably, though, it was also a TCT-required tournament of Furious, in lieu of the otherwise compulsory Elite-Select Challenge, which unfortunately overlaps with the World Ultimate Club Championship in Italy. All this to say, the club season has become very complicated of late, and it now fills my posts with elaborate jargon and ulti-babble.

Flowerbowl 2014

The Comprehensive Spectator’s Guide

Every year, the first Open/Women’s tournament of the Northwest launches the club season, featuring teams from across the continent. The trouble: divided Mixed clubs, split-squads, tryout squads, and droves of the casually semi-retired — half of them using aliases both esoteric and ironic. How will you know who’s who at Flowerbowl this year? Whom are you going to watch?  How will you know what to heckle? For your viewing pleasure, we have demystified and laid bare the elite division for you below.

Furious George Incorporates

This year, in Furious George’s twentieth season, the club will at last register as a non-profit (formally, a “Society”) under the British Columbia Society Act.

This is a rare move in North American ultimate, often reserved for leagues and regional/national associations. In the United States, registering as a non-profit (or not-for-profit) corporation is a task usually not for the faint of heart. Even under the comparatively lenient procedures in Canada, most teams have no formal existence — and if they do, it’s under the umbrella of a league organization.  Nevertheless, it feels a lot like we and the sport are moving out of our adolescence, and we have to keep up with expectations.  Before the end of the month, Furious George, its common property and images will exist under the auspices of the Furious Ultimate Society.* Here is why:

The Dirt Road
A minute ago, the score had been 12-11 in the backdoor game-to-go, in conditions where anything could happen on any pass.  It was a bleak Cascadian afternoon, mixing rain-soaked tones of green and grey.  Coughs and surges of wind came and went.    On  an unforgiving mistake by Portland’s offense, the score parted open to  14-11 for Furious, and a tide of red-clad monkeys began coaxing the disc back against the wind.   Sturdily up to the goal line in steps, one after another, it more closely resembled brickwork than an attack.   It was a decisive moment,  offering yet another chance at life in a season marked all over by knife-edge survival.

An Account of the Most Obscure, Most Ludicrous, and Most Selfless Gesture of the Year

Quarter-to-three on a Wednesday afternoon, and even for Furious, this was cutting it absurdly close.   The sanctioning of a tournament usually entails a reverentially bureaucratic process not for the faint of heart, which Voodoo and Furious now jointly attempted to compress into most of a day.  Few people realized that this moment, transacted over a keyboard, in fact represented the thrilling climax to the Furious season.  There comes a point of familiarity at which one learns to wear the absurd with a sort of dashing savoir-faire.
