Roster 2013 Announced

Earning Your Spot
Spring has almost come to an end, and with it, the end of tryout season. A lot of rosters, for all kinds of teams, have been decided and posted over the last couple of months, accompanied by the usual congratulations, disappointments, and coffee-shop debates. What makes a good team? Who should be on what team? What was the reasoning? What were the circumstances? And something I hear a little too often: “he/she deserved to make that team.”

To deserve membership portrays the team as a kind of country club, and the jersey as its stamp of approval. And that’s not the Furious way.

Whenever we announce a roster, I like to remind everyone — old and new — that no one deserves to make a team. That choice of words (and I pay considerable attention to choice of words) is unsettling. Buried within, there lies the suggestion the team is the reward for some hint of innate talent or the end to hard work. Making the team is not the goal. The real prize is some far-off Promised Land of victory and excellence, and it is a long, hard way there. Teammates are here not because of desert or politics or special merit or some slip of judgment, but because right now, they are the right people for the journey. They have something the team needs — and will need in times to come. You wear the jersey as a reminder of that trust.

You listed below are the 2013 roster: a raw, fresh-faced army out of whom the next Angry Monkey will emerge. Earn the trust that has been invested in you.
